About the course

What is pinyin? Pinyin is a way to spell Mandarin Chinese and helps with pronunciation. To learn how to pronounce Chinese characters, you can start with pinyin. This video teaches you how to correctly pronounce the pinyin initials or the first letters in pinyin. The video will include examples of English words and talk about similarities and differences between pinyin and English sounds (phonemes), so that you will be able to easily remember how to pronounce pinyin. When learning the sounds, I will also show you where to place your teeth and your tongue to help you pronounce more accurately. I will repeat the pinyin initials many times in this course, so feel free to practice along!

Instructor

Hello! My name is Yan Li and I am a teacher. I have taught as a student teacher in Boston for 4 years and I tutor in China over the summers. I am from Guangzhou, China and New York City. I am currently in my last year of studying elementary education at Boston College Lynch School of Education and Human Development. I am also enrolled in the Master's program for Curriculum and Instruction at Boston College, which I will complete in the upcoming year. My favorite part of teaching is getting to know students and creating course materials that engage students to make learning fun and accessible. I believe that each student is fully capable of understanding material. It just depends on how the material is presented to them. My goal is to meet each student where they are at and support them.
