About the course
Did you know that only 10% of your well-being is determined by what happens around you?
The rest is how your mind perceives it.
That means that we have a lot more control over our lives than we know. The world around us is designed to control us - and that is exactly why we need to gain control over ourselves first. Imagine being able to make any situation funny. To rise above your anger and pain. To never have a fight with your best friend. Imagine being the person that everyone wants to spend time with.
The secret lies in the practices of mindfulness and meditation — buzzwords that you may have heard of before. But what do they actually mean?
That is what we will explore in this course. Research shows that people who practice mindfulness exercises have overall sharper attentional skills, more emotional maturity, as well as a more open and creative heart and mind. In a world where we are growing up with increasingly common mental and physical health issues, from depression to poor nutrition, these practices are becoming more and more important to maintaining a strong mind and body that will carry us through life — laughing along the way.
Join me on this five-part journey to learn what no average school will teach you, view the world in new ways, and develop tools to transform your corner of it.
Instructor
Hi there! I’m Nivita, a recent graduate of Columbia University. My interests are far and wide, but my main passion is education. I’ve been working in reformative education and alternative pedagogy for a number of years in New York, before recently returning to my homeland of India to study meditation and other contemplative practices. By next fall, I hope to be back at Columbia getting my master’s in Education, studying new ways to reform the NYC education system. As Albert Einstein said, “Those who have the privilege to know have the duty to act,” and that remains the unwavering motto of my teaching journey.
