About the course

We select words when we speak and write without giving much thought as to WHY we use a word. It’s an involuntary mental decision; in fact, we may take a second or two to “phrase” our thoughts, but WHY do we choose the words we do? The answer is based on our academic vocabulary. Simply put, we are limited to the words that reside within our brains. This probably makes you think, “Hum...how many words do I know? Or how limited or extensive is my vocabulary?” But before you answer these questions in your head, imagine how much more colorful, flexible, and meaningful your conversations and written expression could be with a much broader vocabulary. With that in mind, let’s get started to work on your academic vocabulary by first understanding why the type of word you choose matters.
