About the course

Poetry may seem daunting and thus deter students, but in this course, we will break down that barrier that is keeping you from loving poetry. There is no right way to analyze poetry as poems are always open to your own interpretation, and we will see how to digest poems line-by-line by looking at their contexts, the backgrounds of the poets, and the historical backdrops to helps us flesh out the meanings behind some of the most classic American poems. By the end of this course, you may even find some inspiration to write your own poetry!

Instructor

Hello, and welcome! My name is Negeen, and I can’t wait to be your instructor! I’m Iranian-American and originally from Montana, but moved to Dubai in high school. I received my BA degree in anthropology from UC Berkeley, then started medical school in Cyprus. I transferred back to the States where I am completing my medical studies as an aspiring psychiatrist. As you can see, I have been privileged to travel a lot, and my journeys have shaped my interests. The English language and English literature have always been passions of mine. Throughout my academic career, I have gained a lot of experience as an English and ESL tutor for students of all ages. I believe students learn most effectively when they realize they can utilize the skills they are taught in their own lives, which usually comes from an enjoyable and creative learning experience. It is my goal to provide that for you!
