About the course

During this course, we will be discussing the Christian scene and depiction titled the Maesta. We will discuss the provenance and details of this formulaic subject matter and how it has been depicted over time. We will focus on three different examples of this subject matter made by the three Italian Proto-Renaissance artists, Cimabue, Duccio, and Giotto, and how their works exemplify a transition into the Renaissance and news ways of painting. After viewing these examples we will watch a short clip about the pieces and their home in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

Instructor

Hello, my name is Merritt! I am a student at Yale University where I study Art History and Studio Art. I am personally very passionate about painting and graphic design, specifically, book design. I grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico where I was always surrounded by art. When I was younger I volunteered at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum where I first participated in arts education. I now tour-guide at the Yale Center for British Art where I teach visitors about the collection. I am interested in making art more accessible and hope that shows through in my videos!
